TAKING CARE OF WALKER LAKE

Our lake is the most important and most valuable of all of the assets owned by WLLA.  The lake is used almost all year round with swimming, boating, fishing during the warmer months and ice fishing once the lake freezes in the winter.  Our lake is healthy and managed by the WLLA Lake Committee along with a professional lake management company.  Below you will find the lake testing reports and MSDS sheets for the chemicals used to treat the lake to keep it healthy.

The lake committee needs the assistance of everyone living around the lake. There presently is not a solution to rid the lake of the Japanese Mystery Snails (large black snails) that can be found in large numbers along the shore line. They are being found in many lakes up into Canada. They are not harmful to people although we don't recommend eating them as they can contain parasites. They are a nuisance and can increase in numbers very quickly.  The best action we can take is try to control them.  We are asking everyone with a home on the lake to remove any snails they see, place them in a container with a lid and leave them that way for a couple of weeks before putting them in your garbage. We need to do this whenever we see the snails. We don't know for sure how they arrived in Walker Lake but most likely they were attached to a boat that was transported from another lake to ours. If you have traveled to many of our Western States you will see that they have inspection stations where you need to have your boats inspected before putting them into any water way.

We also need to be more diligent in cleaning goose droppings off the beaches and also on nearby grass. Even much smaller rainfall than we had recently can wash contaminants into the water. We are trying to get a rake down on the beach by the clubhouse. Please use it to rake both the sand and grass areas regularly and remove the droppings to a garbage container. Don't just rake them to a nearby spot away from the beach as they will be washed in during the next storm.

Twin Lakes recently had 100 volunteers removing the invasive weed they have on Little Twin Lake. We need to do the same for our invasive snails..
